2012 Marks 45th Year of Toll-Free Calling in America

Started by AT&T in 1967, toll-free numbers were created as an alternative to collect calling, and also as a way to reduce the need for telephone operators. Because demand for toll-free numbers has been so great, today toll-free numbers have been expanded to include the 888, 877, 866 or 855 area codes, as well as the more commonly known “800 numbers.”
