- There’s always a period of adjustment when a new employee comes on the scene. You train them to do a particular job and over a month or more, they get better and better at it until they’re as expert as they’ll be. Experience at doing one thing day in and day out will give them the ability to deal with multiple situations that may come up and make them great at their job. BUT, it can also cause them to plateau in the happiness department as what they do becomes more repetitive. Switch it up! Train them in other areas and you’ll also get more well rounded employee.
2. Get to know your employees. What they like and what makes them happy. Do it from the start of your working relationship and you can develop a good sense about them; this way you can determine if they’re happy doing what they’re doing.
3. Keep the working environment professional. Discourage disrespectful behavior and take action against it. Having multiples employees that can get along with one another is priceless!
4. Throw parties! That’s right – employees respond well to a fun company attitude. That can be as simple as a bringing in pizza for lunch or decorating for the holidays to having an office bash. Let your employees decorate or help out with the coordinating during slower work hours and win extra points from staff!
5. Take a balanced and fair approach to time off. People get sick. People need mental health days. Don’t have such a strict policy that employees won’t want to take a day off or will be scared to talk to you about it. Don’t be so lax as to let them come and go as they please – that will actually make the job less important to most people! Have a well defined set of rules regarding time off and throw in some flex days in case employees have used up all their time but have an emergency.
As an employer, you have a big hand in making your employees have a great working experience. Sure, you’re busy but employees help make you less busy by taking over tasks you no longer need to commit your own time to. Do them a favor and appreciate what they’re doing for you!
