What to Look for in a Job Candidate

Here at Tollfreenumber.ORG we’re often asked questions about basic business management. Many first-time business-owners just simply don’t know much about running a business and we’re happy to give free advice to budding entrepreneurs, whether they use our service or are just calling in for help. With the economy on the rebound and businesses hiring again, we’ve been asked quite often as of late about the process of hiring new employees. It seems that many callers have had trouble in the past with unreliable employees and are looking for help to avoid the same mistakes they’ve made or have seen made at companies where they’ve worked before. That’s why we’ve created this small guide to help you make the right decisions when hiring new employees.
- Hiring family – Hiring family members is tricky business and one that not all companies are suited for. Often times money can damage relationships between family members. Some entrepreneurs aren’t willing to take risks like that, and that’s fine. It’s your business, you draw the line where you want it. However, some entrepreneurs see family as a chance to spread the wealth or as a reliable, trustworthy source of labor. It’s not our place to advise you one way or the other, we merely ask that you weigh the pros and cons of hiring family member very carefully before you make that decision.
- Referrals – One step up from hiring family is hiring by referral. Put out the word in your local neighborhood that you’re hiring and you’ll be inundated with applications. It’s better to hire locally because odds are you’ll get some of that money back from your employees or their family members. And not only that but your employees will have a short commute meaning they can come in on short notice in an emergency and they won’t be worn out or aggravated after dealing with traffic. You benefit and so does the community. It’s a win-win!
- The Want-Ads – Newspaper want-ads aren’t obsolete! Sure, newspaper readership is down but people still use the paper to advertise employment opportunities. The costs are negligible and the net you cast is much wider than by word-of-mouth. Keep in mind that you can also use resources like The Green Sheet, Pennysaver, or other local publications.
- The Internet – The internet has become a boon for companies looking to hire. Job-search websites like Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com have become the go-to for many businesses. Of course, many companies that use websites like these are massive corporations not looking for advice on a toll free service provider’s blog. For smaller businesses there are always site like Craigslist and JobCrank.com. Remember to post everywhere. The bigger the pond, the more fish you pull and, as a result, you’ll get better, more qualified candidates.
